The party started just a few minutes before I was actually 60 years here on the planet.

My coven sister Q and my daughter Betsy did a bunch of the planning, including asking folks to tell me stories about how I have been present in their lives (at least I think that was the direction, as it was what folks shared). Q and Rynn made an Isis cake that looked really cool and tasted fabulous too! Q and her husband Jordy made soup and chili, lots of folks brought drinks and OF COURSE...nearly everyone came in costume as I had requested.
We had super heroes…Bat Girl & Robin; Wonder Woman & Green Lantern; Clark Kent; magickal creatures; Lovely Ladies; Gods; cowgirls; a Cardinal; a dance hall gal; a skater; Renaissance Man; Skeleton boys; Dark Fae; Beautiful Babes ; young folks; Crone folks; little folks; classy folks and many more! I laughed so hard at some of the tales that I needed to drink more champagne… such a hard life! I had no clear idea of how I have touched so many people. It seems from the stories, that I am kinder and more companionate person than I think I am. My community is amazing and my heart was so full of the love and laughter folks shared that night.
Folks brought lovely gifts, many purchased from my Wish List at Air and Fire in Boulder Creek and gifts from the Sacred Grove in Santa Cruz. now.

Someone I thought I knew used an email to drop out of an advanced Witchcraft, thirteen month class I am teaching. Everyone in the group made a commitment for the full thirteen months and we are only in month five. It leaves the other students in a lurch, as there are assignments and projects that have been assigned to pairs of students.

It leaves me appalled and hurt. Just sat down to tea with this person last nite …with no hint of a reference to dropping out of the course. This is a person I took into my life, my world and my community as a very close friend. Just as we completed the session focused on Emotion (Water element), this friend dumps their commitment, avoiding ‘face-time’ with teacher and friend. I am really surprised and still in shock, trying to get thru a day at work. So what to do???

The old axiom “when hurt or sad or depressed … learn something'” lights up in my brain and off I go…reading Neil Gaiman’s latest blog …reading about art printing …reading about something new!!

Read, learn, grow… center balance … choose

Do I really want to have any friends who use email as a replacement for face-time communication? I must say NO, the direction I take is that sometimes-rocky path of honesty and clarity. As Priestess and Feri, when I see this occur, I wonder what actual thought is going into that sort of choice.

Yes, I DO know that it is a great deal of work to conceive, create and present something new every time, but the intensity and evolution in that work outshines what’s available doing ‘repeat performances’. There is always the risk that folks may not like what you present, or get your intention, but those risks are worth the rewards, in my experience. I can back up that opinion with 7+ years of participating, helping to plan, cat-herding, stage managing and (several times) being the concept person for large ritual presentations at Pantheacon and at the Faerie Mid-summer Barter Market. It really is scads of work, especially if you want to have a substantial group of Priests working together, props and costume pieces … all to support and present that new ritual.

The juice of current that follows thru both Priest and Participant when something new and unique is shared grows the sweet fruit of magick in every heart it touches. That experience, however ephemeral, leaves an incisive mark of change and growth. This is what doing public (and private) rituals is really about, as far as I am concerned.

Offering the Witch community experiences diluted by watered-down recycled rituals seems to engender the opposite result and we start to look like other, ‘organized’ religions that offer repetitive, hide-bound monophonic experiences.

So, here is my ‘soap box’ slogan this week:

Let us all work toward creating and sharing those experiences that grow us in all our parts.

As a good friend of mine says, “<span style="color: #333333; It is characterized by large multifaceted eyes, two pairs of strong transparent wings, and an elongated body. Dragonflies typically eat mosquitoes, midges and other small insects like flies, bees, and butterflies. They are usually found around lakes, ponds, streams, and wetlands because their larvae, known as "nymphs", are aquatic.

Dragonflies do not normally bite or sting humans (though they will bite in order to escape, for example, if grasped by the abdomen); in fact, they are valued as a predator that helps control the populations of harmful insects, such as mosquitoes. It is because of this that dragonflies are sometimes called "mosquito hawks" in North America along with the Crane Fly (which, in fact, does not eat mosquitoes).

Female dragonflies lay eggs in or near water, often in or on floating or emergent plants. Some species when laying eggs will submerge themselves completely just to lay their eggs in a suitable place. Most of the life of the dragonfly is spent in the larval, (naiad, aka nymph) form, beneath the water surface, using internal gills to breathe, and using extendable jaws to catch other invertebrates or even vertebrates such as tadpoles and fish. The larvae of large dragonflies may live as long as five years, or two months to three years in smaller species. When the the larva is ready to metamorphose into an adult, it climbs up a reed or other emergent plant at night, and when it does the breathing pattern changes inside the larvae's body. Then the skin splits at a weak spot behind the head and the adult dragonfly crawls out of its old larval skin, waits for the sun to rise, pumps up its wings and flies off to feed on midges and flies. In the adult stage, larger species of dragonfly can live as long as four months.

Ancient dragonflies ("Anisozygoptera")

Conventionally, the Anisoptera were given suborder rank beside the ancient dragonflies ("Anisozygoptera", two living species and numerous fossil ones), but it has been determined recently that the Anisozygoptera form a paraphyletic assemblage of primitive relatives of the Anisoptera. Thus, the Anisoptera are reduced to an infraorder, forming the new suborder Epiprocta (dragonflies in a general sense). The artificial grouping Anisozygoptera is disbanded, its members being recognized as largely extinct offshoots at various stages of dragonfly evolution.

The oldest known species of dragonfly is the 320 million year old Delitzschala bitterfeldensis. Freya was famous for her beauty and her knowledge as a magician. It was she who taught Odin the shamanic practices known as seidr which were still practiced during Christian times. The paired bodies of mating dragonflies form the shape of a heart, perhaps being the source for that modern symbol of love. In ancient lore, the dragonfly represents transformation, adaptation and insight.

European Dragonfly Folklore, In most cultures dragonflies have been objects of superstition. European folklore is no exception. Many old myths have been lost during the history, but fragments of these old myths are still living in old local names for dragonflies. Only in Germany dragonflies have had over 150 different names. Some of these are Teufelsnadel ("Devil's needle"), Wasserhexe ("Water witch"), Hollenross ("Goddess' horse"), Teufelspferd ("Devil's horse") and Schlangentöter ("Snake killer"). Also the name Snake Doctor has been used in Germany. In England the name Devil's darning needle and Horse stinger have been used. In Denmark the dragonfly have got such different names as Fandens ridehest ("Devil's riding horse") and Guldsmed ("Goldsmith"). Different names of dragonflies referring to them as the devils tools have also occurred in many other European cultures, some examples are the Spanish Caballito del Diablo ("Devil's horse") and the French l'aiguille du diable ("Devil's needle").

The Swedish name for dragonfly is trollslända, which means "hobgoblin fly" in English. Long time ago people in Sweden believed that hobgoblins, elves, brownies and such creatures lived in our great woods. In that folklore the dragonflies was considered to be the hobgoblins twisting tools. During the history the dragonflies even have been connected with love and female, the names damselfly (England), Demoiselle (France) and Jungfer (Germany) are some examples of those nice associations.

An old Swedish name for dragonfly is Blindsticka ("Blind stinger"), this name comes from the opinion that a dragonfly could pick out your eyes. Other people thought that the dragonfly could sew together your eyelids. The same name appears as well in Norway ("Öyenstikker") as in Germany ("Augenstecher").

In certain parts of Norway, the dragonfly is also known as "oslash;rsnildra". The exact meaning of this word is unknown to me but the part "oslash", does obviously refer to the Norwegian word for "ear", as people (and especially children) often thought that the dragonfly would poke holes in their ear-drums if it got inside their ears!

An other old Swedish name is Skams besman ("Devil's steelyard"), this name probably depends on the dragonfly's body shape that, with some imagination looks like the weighting tool. In the folklore this was interpreted as that the Devil used the dragonfly to weight the people's souls. When a dragonfly flew around your head, your soul was weighted and you should expect seriously injury as punishment. It is very interesting that, despite of those ideas that the dragonfly should be the Devil's tool, the dragonfly have been a holy animal in Scandinavia. In the Æsir cult the dragonfly was thought to be the love goddess Freya's symbol.

Some of the Latin names of dragonfly families have interesting meanings: The name Libellula might have been derived from the word libella ("booklet") referring to the resting dragonfly, which wings, with some imagination, looks quite like the pages of an open book. The name Odonata was created by Fabricius in 1793 as name for the whole dragonfly order, means "toothed".

In some countries, e.g. Indonesia, many African and South American countries both the adult and larva dragonflies are caught to be eaten fried or in soup. In China and Japan the dragonflies has been treated as holy animals, and believed to have medical qualities. Even today the dragonfly Sympetrum frequens is used as fever reducing drug. All over the world dragonflies have been used in different forms of art, stamps and more

Dragonfly is the power of light. The dragonfly inhabits two realms: air and water and the influence of both these elements will be felt by Dragonfly people. They will be emotional and passionate during their early years (the influence of water) and more balanced with greater mental clarity and control in as they mature (the influence of air).

When a dragonfly lands on you, you will hear excellent news from someone far away from home. A dead dragonfly symbolizes sad news. Dragonfly symbolism crosses and combines with that of the butterfly and change. The dragonfly symbolizes going past self-created illusions that limit our growing and changing. Dragonflies are a symbol of the sense of self that comes with maturity.

They are fantastic flyers, darting like light, twisting, turning, changing direction, even going backwards as the need arises. They are inhabitants of two realms - starting with water, and moving to the air with maturity, but staying close to water. Some people who have the dragonfly as their totem have had emotional and passionate early years, but as they get older they achieve balance with mental clarity and control. They gain an expression of the emotional and mental together.

Dragonflies are old and adaptive insects, and are most powerful in the summer under the effects of warmth and sunlight. Their colors are a result of reflecting and refracting the power of light. As a result, they are associated with color magic, illusion in causing others only to see what you wish, and other mysticism.

The are often represented in Japanese paintings, representing new light and joy. To some Native Americans they are the souls of the dead. Faerie stories say that they used to be real dragons.

Dragonflies are reminders that we are light and can reflect the light in powerful ways if we choose to do so. "Let there be light" is the divine prompting to use the creative imagination as a force within your life. They help you to see through your illusions and allow your own light to shine in a new vision.

Mastery of life on the wing - Power of flight

Power to escape a blow - Understanding dreams

Power of light - Breaking down illusions

Seeing the truth in situations - Swiftness

Change - Connection to Dragon

Dragonfly . . . She was covered with beautiful, shimmering scales and could change form at will. She carried great strength, but was easily fooled and one day Coyote tricked Dragon into changing into a tiny Dragonfly. Dragon became forever trapped in this illusion of its own making and the story suggests, when Dragonfly enters our lives, it is time to carefully examine the illusions we’ve created about ourselves and remember that we too can change form at will and wield great inner strength. Dragonfly is a gentle reminder of our own limitless divinity.

dinner with Alison

On the 31st, at 7 pm I sat down to dinner with my beloved friend, teacher and mentor, Alison Harlow. As I shopped for this dinner the previous day, picking out the foods she loved the best and finding new things I felt she might enjoy, I realized with a start that I had not eaten a meal with her since May of 2004, a month before she died.
I had spoken with her, called her into circle and asked her questions through a Witch Board ... yes ... but dinner, not until 3 weeks ago. She was quiet at first, with that lovely, slightly wicked glint in her eye as she accepted the plate I offered and I seated myself opposite her in silence. There were two other living friends having supper with one of their beloved dead at the same table, but as we served our friends and sat it seemed that we each went into separate communion with our dinner partner. There were few instructions from Alison, save that I prepare and eat dinner with her at this time of year until I join her on the other side of the Veil. Our communication seemed to come through the food we ate and the deep silence that surrounded us. I still miss her in this world almost daily, but I know that any time I feel drawn to make her a favorite meal I will not eat alone.
<img width='1' height='1' Wow, feels really different!

<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" It says nearly all I can think of to say about the human community and where we can 'go' from here.

Look again at that dot. That's here. That's home. That's us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every "superstar," every "supreme leader," every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there--on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam.

The Earth is a very small stage in a vast cosmic arena. Think of the rivers of blood spilled by all those generals and emperors so that, in glory and triumph, they could become the momentary masters of a fraction of a dot. Think of the endless cruelties visited by the inhabitants of one corner of this pixel on the scarcely distinguishable inhabitants of some other corner, how frequent their misunderstandings, how eager they are to kill one another, how fervent their hatreds.

Our posturings, our imagined self-importance, the delusion that we have some privileged position in the Universe, are challenged by this point of pale light. Our planet is a lonely speck in the great enveloping cosmic dark. In our obscurity, in all this vastness, there is no hint that help will come from elsewhere to save us from ourselves.

The Earth is the only world known so far to harbor life. There is nowhere else, at least in the near future, to which our species could migrate. Visit, yes. Settle, not yet. Like it or not, for the moment the Earth is where we make our stand.

It has been said that astronomy is a humbling and character-building experience. There is perhaps no better demonstration of the folly of human conceits than this distant image of our tiny world. Lovecraft's work seemed to have an influence during the formative years of the Craft in the 20th century... or maybe it was the other way-round, and we had an influence on his writing?
Here's Neil's interview:

Phython meets Star Trek

If you are a fan of Knights and legends, the Monty Python fellows and of the original Star Trek this You-Tube is a must see!
OMG...LOL

Witchcraft in the Elizabethan Age

<p class="MsoNormal" style="mso-pagination:none;mso-layout-grid-align:none; It was a really good time for Witches to stay underground about their private practices and to profess links to Christianity for their health and well-being. Drawing upon my knowledge of the period, I turned up this very wonderful little piece about a handwritten book of shadows written in 1590.

I am writing an article on my website about this rather exciting time in the Age of Witchcraft. Remember, Queen Elizabeth would regularly consult with Dr. John Dee before she made many major decisions. Practicing Witchcraft in the Elizabethan Age was challenging at the very least, but the Queen always kept her "Astrologer" very close!

Worldwide Web 2.0-the easy way

Hey folks, this a very informative and easy to understand video about

the new Community Worldwide Web 2.0 ... enjoy!

My friend friend, Mead Rose turned me on to this. On Saturday, the 3rd, with Community Seed group. I joined with many folk in "dancing and drumming and singing up our creativity", which was the theme of this event.

Then on Sunday, the 4th, FireDrake Grove folks celebrated our Beltane here at Dragondale. The Hunters 'hunted' the pole and brought into the Circle where the Gatherers stroked it with magickal oils and topped it with a ring of ribbons before they stood it erect. It was then the task of the Hunters to entertain the Gatherers with tall stories, songs and boasts, which was very well done. The Gatherers then picked from the Hunters their favorite to become the "Jack-of-the-Green" and to be wrapped to the pole with the ribbons as we wove them, weaving the energy of our joy and laughter into the Earth. Our "jack-of-the-Green" this year was one of our newest participants who was having a birthday that very day and told a marvelous story. After releasing our "jack" by unwinding the ribbons to just above her head, we indulged in a sweet treat of puddings and wine. The puddings were presented on a platter with it's very own little Maypole, from which the spoons dangled on ribbons. Goddess praise our magnificent Cake Maker! The Circle was filled with beautiful folk splendidly topped with head wreaths we created before the ritual began. And ... we danced *barefoot* on a circle of grass planted as sod only 4 weeks previous. Hooray for the Green!

On Monday, I joined many other Feri folk and kin to celebrate Cora Anderson's life at a memorial service in her honour in Hayward. The shifts of her passing will ripple for some long time. Blessings to you, Cora, your gifts and your kindness will live on thru your Kin.

Cora's Beltane

<img style="display:block; Paxson. It's an expansion/back story to Marion Zimmer Bradley's Avalon series ... and wow! I could not put this down. I kept reading very late into the night/early in the am.

It's the life of Boudica, the Celtic Queen, from youth through motherhood and on as she transforms into the Red-Warrior Queen of the British tribes.

This is a really fabulous piece of storytelling, weaving legend, magick and history. Ms. Paxson's attention to the details of ornament, dress, dwelling and community behaviors is astounding and engages you in every aspect of the tale. There are several powerful, lyrical magickal rites and invocations that I intend to weave into my practice of Witchcraft, with attribute given to Diana Paxson of course!

Here's a little taste of one of the magickal rites, Boudica's wedding (verbatim quote - page 112 hardcover)

As her mother led Boudica forward, the boys began to sing-

"You are the moon among the stars,

You are the foam upon the wave,

You are the lily among the flowers,

You are the spark that starts the flame,

You are the beloved."

Prasutagos, dressed in a splendid fringed cloak checked in seven colors over a tunic and braes striped in blue and red, emerged from the crowd of men to stand beside her as the maidens who escorted

Bodica replied -

"You are the sun above the clouds,

You are the wave that strikes the shore,

You are the oak within the wood,

You are the torch that lights the hall,

You are the beloved."

What a beautiful litany to begin a Handfasting!

Ms. Paxson is a practitioner of Asatru and a really marvelous writer, as well as a kind and generous person!

Her kindred website is http//www.hrafnar.org

Thank you, Diana Paxson!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://wytchwoodwytch.blogspot.com/2008/03/great-book-ravens-of-avalon.html' title='Great Book!
